Extension and Outreach

Dissemination of information to the public is one of my main focuses as a researcher and I take every chance I get to share my findings with people who can benefit from them. This page outlines my experience working with the public, including talks, volunteer opportunities, and other extra-curricular involvement.

Field Days

Field days are outdoor meetings for showcasing new farming practices, sharing on-farm research results and demonstrating how research findings can be implemented. It also serves as a forum to address farmer and other stakeholder questions and concerns related to pest management and other farming issues. This format requires the instructor to establish demonstration plots, prepare handouts, do a short presentation and address attendees’ questions.

Volunteer Outreach

Besides communicating with agricultural communities that directly benefit from the research I participate in, another goal of mine is to connect with organizations that can reach alternative demographics. Some communities that I commonly have worked with are school kids and local community organizers.

Extension publications

Extension publications are articles written for a non-scientific audience to provide details on agriculture or gardening topics that might be challenging to access otherwise. These might include research updates, best practices for pest or weed control, factsheets on common pests and pathogens, etc...
